Ladies and gentlemen the new pavilion is about to be built!

The Friends of Herne Hill Velodrome has signed a 99 year lease with the Dulwich Estate and British Cycling, the £1.8 million funding has been agreed with The Marathon Trust, Sport England, Southwark Council and the Mayor’s Fund and the winning-bid contractors, Conamar, have been officially hired to do the job. What we‘ve always called the final phase of saving the Velodrome is about to happen.
In the words of Richard Williams, the man who’s been heroically leading for the Herne Hill Velodrome Trust on the pavilion construction: “Dear all, At 5.25pm today cycling was preserved at Herne Hill until the 8th April 2115!!”

Or, in the words of a Brazilian football commentator: “Goooooooooooooooooooooooaaaalllllllll”

Conamar are going to start knocking down the old pavilion on Monday 18th April and the hope is that the new one will be up and running by the start of 2017. The contractors have agreed to make every effort to allow all activities at the Velodrome to continue throughout the construction period. So unless you hear otherwise, everything is still going on. But inevitably there’s going to be a bit of disruption. There’ll certainly be reduced parking space, dust and mud at times and access routes are going to be narrower. Let’s all try to cope with these relatively minor problems as best we can, help the builders as much as possible and keep our eyes on the prize that’s around 9 months away.

Showers, changing facilities, proper toilets, a proper café space, sheltered spectating; they’re all coming and I think I’m about to cry!

Happy Days.

A thousand thanks to all who helped us get to here, especially you as a Friend of Herne Hill Velodrome.

A good wheel to follow
