The sun is coming
I’m not afraid to admit that I now exist as a fair weather rider. The feeling of the sun’s rays on my skin over the last week has been the tonic I needed to get off the turbo and back onto the roads (the lighter evenings also help). And with a hint of warmth in between those widely spaced isobars, it’s got me excited about the forthcoming season.
However the Jewell in the crown of my cycling calendar, Ride London, has sadly been postponed for 2025 until further notice, I’ve had to look elsewhere to fulfil the excitement of what was such a joyous event.
Thankfully, the UK has a smorgasbord of epic sportives to choose from and even though some of the most popular events sold out months ago, there’s still time to secure a place in some brilliant alternatives.

But, I can ride on the roads for free…
If you’re new to sportives, you might wonder why people pay to cycle on roads that are free to use. A fair argument I guess. The answer lies in the experience. Many sportives offer traffic management or even fully closed roads, making for a safer and more enjoyable ride. Then there’s the camaraderie, well-placed refreshment stops, and that unbeatable sense of achievement when you cross the finish line, often with a well-earned medal to show for it. If you’re looking for a goal to keep you motivated, a sportive could be just catalyst you need to cut back on the booze and get back in the saddle 🙂

Band of climbers toughest 100

Price: From £48.00
Location: Sheffield
Distance: 68-131 Miles
Event Website: https://www.bocescapes.com/
The Band of Climbers Toughest 100 is the UK’s most demanding and hilliest sportive, set to take place over the weekend of 16th–17th August 2025 in Sheffield and the breathtaking Peak District.
Make it a weekend to remember by kicking things off with a fun hill climb race and social ride on Saturday afternoon. Then, on Sunday 17th, take on the UK’s toughest sportive—now with an all-new XXL route option that takes the challenge to another level.
The legendary original route may cover just over 100km (62 miles), but don’t let the distance fool you—it’s arguably the hardest sportive of its kind. With over 3,200m (10,500ft) of elevation packed into 22 relentlessly steep ascents, every mile is earned.
For perspective, The Toughest 100 has 65% more elevation per mile than the notorious Fred Whitton Challenge. While “The Fred” averages 85ft of climbing per mile, this event demands a punishing 154ft per mile—or 29m per km compared to 17.5m per km on “The Fred.”
This isn’t just a challenge, it’s a test of pure grit. Are you ready to take it on (It’s a hard no from me!)
